Here's what Maria says about the project:

The Machine is my first fever dream of pictures in motion. It’s a surreal journey through various kinds of plumbing exploding in elaborate fantasy fountains.

At the beginning of everything, there was an artesian well.

An artesian well is a simple yet fascinating phenomenon; it is a spring that brings water to the surface just by its own pressure. In the event that an artesian well is hit, e.g., while fracking, its water starts gushing with such force that it can turn a valley into a lake and a lake into the sea.

It’s uncontainable, like a ruptured artery.

The only way to stop it is to build an elaborate Machine around it to control its potency.

There are many forms of those: a simple metal pipe with a valve standing in the Messel Pit; the Machine de Marly, which pumped water from the Seine for the waterworks of Versailles; and the Grenelle Fountain, which was a gushing artesian well in the middle of Paris that needed to be turned off due to the incredible noise the water made day and night.

This movie is also a little journey through the Eocene, the geological epoch in which most of our modern flora and fauna appeared for the first time. The water passes through a laboratory at Dawn, guided by a cicada, the companion of Eos, and continues its way to the Golden Paleozoic Fern Fountain.

And then down, up, and down and it appears as a little spring at a garbage dump in the forest, where plastiglomerate sediments, broken motorbikes, and Pepsi cans are shimmering like jewels.

It culminates in a rococo wastebasket fountain and disappears into a never ending artesian cycle.

As the I-Ching says, political structures change, as do nations, the style of architecture has changed over the course of centuries, but the shape of the well has remained the same from ancient times to this day. As the well is our inexhaustible subconscious.``
